Many patients report that they find it difficult to clean their teeth properly when they have additional fixed orthodontic appliances and notice that food debris remains.
At the end of orthodontic treatment, every patient will have a bright, straight smile that, in order to enjoy it, they take the responsibility of keeping their mouth clean and healthy. If proper oral hygiene is not practiced, food particles will stick to the appliances and plaque will systematically accumulate in the small gaps and hard-to-reach places between the appliances and the teeth. As a result, over time this will cause possible tooth decay, tooth decay and possible periodontal and gum problems. The question is:
How do we manage to clean them thoroughly?
Individually brush each tooth thoroughly on all surfaces
Use either an electric or manual toothbrush without excessive force as this will damage the gums
Use of an interdental brush of appropriate size for each interdental space (discuss with clinician)
Brushing 2 times a day morning and evening (suggested after each meal if possible) for about 2-3 minutes.
Use of dental floss intended for teeth with braces
Mouthwashes and specialised fluoride toothpastes are recommended
! Note: Every patient with braces belongs to a high caries risk group and should visit their dentist every 6 months for teeth cleaning, checking for any incipient caries lesions and preventing their progression through tooth fluoridation.
